“But it’s the way we have always done it!”, this statement makes my skin crawl in irritation. I am sure that you have heard something similar to this phrase or maybe you were the one saying it. The truth is if things are functioning in the mindset of, “the way it’s always been done” it could be a clear indication that it’s time to change.
Change is inevitable. If you are going to drive success in your organization, business or personal development you have to stop and identify the things that are holding you back from rising to the next level. Complacency is often one of the key factors that hinders success. I refer to it as an enemy to growth. If you do things the same way they have always been done you will always get the same results you have always gotten. I learned that principle from a dear mentor many years ago.
It is important to self-evaluate and determine some key factors:
1) Do we want to grow?
2) What is preventing us from that growth?
3) What changes do we need to make for a new and better result?
I have served in leadership with organizations and companies for many years. There are some that have easily been open to change and discovering new practices that form better results. We developed strategic plans and the end results always exceeded the expectations. As a team we were devoted to the greater vision and were willing to change, adapt, modify, and implement the necessary aspects to achievement.
And there have been others that identified as the, “big ship to turn”. You often see and even feel the potential of the “what if’s”. You become excited about being a part of initiating change that will lead the company to a higher level and greater impact. And then comes that monster, “COMPLACENCY”! He is spitting out venomous words of destruction like, “But it’s the way we have always done it!”, “Why change it now?”, and “Don’t reinvent the wheel!” Well, your wheel is broken and missing a few spokes. It’s cachunking along a very bumpy road about to break apart. It’s time for a new one!
I have tried to always see the glass overflowing not half empty. There is great potential in every opportunity! Even in the moments that seem bumpy and you are battling with the unchanging monster. I have learned in challenging moments to find strength, determination, and creative ways to sell the greater vision of what could be. Yes, there are moments when you come to the cross roads and need to make a determining decision on direction. Is what I am feeling bigger than what this company or organization is wanting to achieve? Are they desiring to grow or are they happy continuing to get the same results?
I have learned you can’t lead change with no followers. It takes a team to launch a dream. It’s the tough moments at the crossroad that will define us and lead us in the right direction. If the door closes God will open another where there is a group of people craving the next level of vision, growth and impact.
Are there areas in your personal development that you identify need to change?
What are areas within the organization or company you serve that you see potential beyond where it is today?
What is one thing that you can do today that will begin that change?
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19
